The Things We Never Say

The things we never say
Keep ringing in my ears
Keep bringing up all the ways
That I can't stop thinking about my fears
We keep piling on the days
Until they turn into years
And the things we never say
They just keep ringing in our ears
We make our peace, we make our love
We make our deals with above
We search our heart, we speak our mind
We rehearse our part, we recite our lines
We hold our breath, we hold our tongue
We defy our death, we eat our young
We make our peace, we make our love
We make our deals with above
The things we never say
Keep ringing in my ears
Keep bringing up all the ways
That I can't stop thinking about my fears
We keep piling on the days
Until they turn into years
And the things we never say
They just keep ringing in our ears
We spend our days, we earn our keep
We find our way, we lose our sleep
We punch our clock, we pay our bills
We take our stock, we hone our skills
We climb our walls, we clear our heads
We screen our calls, we adjust our meds
We spend our days, we earn our keep
We find our way, we lose our sleep
The things we never say
Keep ringing in my ears
Keep bringing up all the ways
That I can't stop thinking about my fears
We keep piling on the days
Until they turn into years
And the things we never say
They just keep ringing in our ears
We cast our vote, we cast our net
We voice our hope, we hedge our bets
We pledge our time, we take our cue
We toe our line, we state our views
We demand our rights, we right our wrongs
We give up the fight, we write our songs
We cast our vote, we cast our net
We voice our hope, we hedge our bets
The things we never say
Keep ringing in my ears
Keep bringing up all the ways
That I can't stop thinking about my fears
We keep piling on the days
Until they turn into years
And the things we never say
They just keep ringing in our ears

Cosmic Debris

Today I was downtown, I ran into a friend
I hadn’t seen or heard from him in quite some time
We talked about the things we’d done and where we’d been
It was really kind of weird, ‘cause just this morning he had crossed my mind
That happens all the time
You get a song stuck in your head that you haven’t heard for years
You turn on the radio, and it’s the first song that you hear
If you think about it, this town is just like outer space
If you take away all the buildings and the solid ground
Eliminate the gravity and just float around
Faces and words come drifting by like cosmic debris
You see what passes by
You try to gather clues to determine where you are
Sit back, enjoy the view and simply drift among the stars
Last night it was so cold that when I went outside
There was a thin crust of frozen moonlight on the field
Everything was blue, it was so surreal
It was so bright that I was casting shadows in the dark
I looked up in the sky
I saw the big dipper just above the treeline
It hung just like a question mark
I don’t know what to make of all of this
I don’t know what it means
I don’t know if there’s some message here
Aimed pointedly at me
But I’m walking through a forest
Or is it swimming in a sea?
Of random scattered images
Of cosmic debris

If You Bury Me

If you bury me
Won’t you make it good and deep
And scatter through this dusty world
The things I cannot keep
And if you burn my body
Won’t you make my fire hot
And let my sparks go flying ‘round
The dreams that I forgot
I’m already home
I’m already up and gone
She talks to goats, she gathers scraps
That’s how she spends her days
She carries cans of chicken scratch
And snoozes in the hay
And after all these 80 years
She’s still amazed by the sky
She beams just like a little girl
Staring up into God’s eye
She’s already home
She’s already up and gone
The day my daddy died
We all gathered ‘round
It was just like watching
A feather settle down
His hands and dreams grew icy cold
It was time for him to rise
When the moment finally came
He opened up his eyes
He’s already home
He’s already up and gone
Miss Emily A. Brown
Was born in 1844
She died in ‘65
Just 21 years old
I walked across her grave one day
I was on my way to work
They had carved two roses in her stone
I brushed away the dirt
So if you bury me
Won’t you make it good and deep
And scatter through this dusty world
The things I cannot keep
And if you burn my body
Won’t you make my fire hot
And let my sparks go flying ‘round
The dreams that we forgot
We're all already home
We're already up and gone
We’re all already home
We’re already up and gone
